Backing Musicians for Canada

Some projects you say yes to before the email is even finished. Musicians for Canada was one of those.

On Wednesday, July 22, a remarkable group of Alberta artists will gather at the Heritage Amphitheatre in Hawrelak Park for Musicians for Canada: A Benefit Concert for Canadian Unity - a day of music built on a simple, generous idea. The brainchild of P.J. Perry, one of this country’s great jazz musicians and a Member of the Order of Canada, the concert is a chance for the music community to stand together, celebrate where we live, and look after the people who share it with us.

And the line-up is something special. Secondhand Dreamcar, The McDades, The Mbira Renaissance Band, Stewart MacDougall & the New Chinook Arch Riders performing the songs of Ian Tyson, the blues of The Porch Dogs with Jimmy Guiboche and Tony D, and the P.J. Perry Quintet with guest vocalist Mallory Chipman - jazz, folk, blues and roots, all on one stage in the river valley. Every artist is donating their time.

Here’s the part that matters most to us: the proceeds go straight to three organizations doing essential work right here in Edmonton - the Edmonton Food Bank, The Bissell Centre, and Sanctuary of Peace. A great day of live music that also helps neighbours facing food insecurity and homelessness is exactly the kind of thing we want our name on.

At Dept.9 Music, we're passionate about supporting local and Canadian artists and helping our music community thrive. Events like this bring people together around great music while creating a positive impact beyond the stage. We're proud to support an event that celebrates Alberta artists and gives back to the community at the same time.

If you’re in town on July 22, come join us. Gates open at 2:00 PM and the music runs through to 10:00 PM. Bring your people, settle into the amphitheatre, and let some of Alberta’s best send a little goodwill back into the community.
